Tiles Of Mass Construction - Currently on display at Lofos Art Project - Athens
Palestinians have been producers and users of handmade tiles in both private and public spaces. Tiles were both practical and decorative in Palestinian cities near the sea, protecting from humidity and salt. Tiles were used on floors, kitchens, bathrooms and even on the outside walls, in restaurants, for drinking fountains and public baths. Tiles represent endurance, protection and beauty.
In the mid of the urbicide, the Gaza Strip is left with 42 million tons of rubble, and the destruction is only growing. The creativity is used for control and death has never been seen before, with the newest Killer AIs, unmanned killer drones, new chemicals and newest weapons tested on civilians, half of them children. Blocks, windows, doors, ceilings and tiles cover thousands of unrecovered bodies. With every shattered tile and collapsed roof, stories and dreams are destroyed, leaving a lingering pain that echoes through the rubble. But people, animals and nature are all part of life, and life has a tendency to conquer death. These ceramic tiles reflect tools of control, torture, violence and war with fragments of resilience, hope and beauty. Life above death.
Tiles from up downward: Tiles of ‘Famine’, ‘Jets & Birds’, ‘Drones, ‘I See You’, ’The Wall’
